James Arthur Baldwin was born in New York on August 2, 1924 and grew up mostly in Harlem. He was an American novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, and social critic. Mr. Baldwin is best known for his first novel, “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” published in 1953.
